The DimoMaint CMMS allowed Schenk to significantly improve its preventive maintenance operation and the follow-up of its maintenance activity.

For a long time, Schenk relied on human memory and spreadsheets to run its maintenance department. Progressively aware of the limits of this organizational model and following the growth of its activity, the company chose to invest in a CMMS.

The choice of a CMMS solution that was intuitive and quick to deploy was readily made and, as a result, Maintenance Manager Philippe Lacôte has noticed a better follow-up on maintenance activities and significant development of preventive maintenance.

A CMMS to support the growth of the firm’s wine production

Shenk vineyard SCHENK S.A. (120 employees) has played a dominant role in the Swiss wine industry since its creation in 1893. Its activities range from the production and cellaring of Swiss wines to the import of foreign wines from more than fifteen countries.

A large bottling and packaging plant allows the company to offer its customers (wholesalers and distributors) a very wide range of products that come in various packaging. In addition to wines, the company also markets grape juice in bulk under the Grapillon brand, which it has developed itself.

Philippe Lacôte, explains: “Given our growth and the increase in quality requirements from upper management, we thought about setting up a CMMS system. The objective was to implement a concrete preventive maintenance plan with an easy-to-use CMMS software.

Ensuring the traceability of maintenance interventions and implementing a preventive maintenance plan

Under the direction of Philippe Lacôte, a mobile team comprised of 12 people works on the maintenance of the buildings and technical installations of the 11 SCHENK company sites.

The team possesses the skillsets of an electrician, mechanic, locksmith, painter, cleaning service, janitor, and heating engineer, and apply them to work on a large number of diverse equipment, such as wine pumps, tangential filters, wine-making tanks, bottling lines, labeling machines, palletizers, refrigeration, and ventilation systems…

« For a long time, management of the maintenance department was based on a few data tables and our technicians’ unique and irreplaceable memory » recalls the maintenance manager.

For the Schenk maintenance department, the new CMMS had to satisfy the following requirements:

  • To ensure a more precise follow-up of maintenance interventions;
  • To build a documented database and optimize information feedback within the company;
  • To implement a preventive maintenance plan;
  • To optimize the management of subcontracts;
  • To generate reliable performance indicators and reports.

DimoMaint: for a simplified and efficient management of maintenance activity

Shenk grape maintenance

As it became increasingly necessary to simplify the company’s equipment maintenance processes, Schenk’s maintenance teams started looking for a CMMS tool with two essential requirements:

  • simplicity of use;
  • speed of deployment.

Philippe Lacôte explains: « We chose the DimoMaint solution for its power and ability to adapt to our business specificities and meet all our functional needs. It was also the simplest and most user-oriented solution and could be implemented progressively.»

The maintenance manager was also seduced by the ease with which his team could enter all existing documentation (notices, pdf files, photos, etc.) into the solution’s database.

Benefits:

Implementing the CMMS software has allowed his team to:

  • prioritize, prepare and plan maintenance interventions and ensure their traceability. All intervention requests are computerized for the 11 sites and created by the service managers.
  • ensure the reliability of the equipment.
  • store and utilize historical data from the maintenance activities.

« Since we started using the DimoMaint solution, we have been able to optimize the monitoring of our equipment thanks to a working preventive maintenance plan » adds Philippe Lacôte.

Finally, he concludes by explaining that «preventive maintenance now represents nearly 40% of our work orders. The DimoMaint CMMS helps with diagnosis as well, which is directly enriched with historical data. It also tracks the cost of each piece of equipment. Finally, it has brought down the time lost from machine failure to less than 10% of the machines’ operational time, while occurrences of production interruption have been drastically reduced.»

The DimoMaint CMMS for quality certification

DimoMaint is a central tool in SCHENK AG’s information system and helps with their IFS and ISO 22000 certifications.

ISO 22000 inspects every aspect of a company, as well as its practices and employee behaviors. It checks all the production parameters, tools, and instruments, and also verifies the safety of every material and product that passes through the company. This makes a highly alert and ultra-efficient management system all the more indispensable.

IFS certification, on the other hand, is more focused on safety throughout the production and packaging processes, and emphasis is put on traceability.

Concerning these two quality certifications, the DimoMaint CMMS offers:

  • historical records of all glass breakage incidents, with their number, location, date, etc.;
  • detailed lubrication plans with suitable lubricating oil for general and food-processing machines;
  • an easy follow-up on periodic and regulatory machine checks defined in the preventive maintenance plan.
